When Principal Prickly's car gets stuck in a snowdrift, he and passengers Miss Finster and Miss Grotke reminisce about the good and bad aspects of their students, segueing nicely into episodes from the animated television series. These include Detweiler's stint as principal for a day, the gang's rivalry with the Ashleys during the Thanksgiving can drive, and the elderly Miss Finster's surprising luau weekend with Spinelli. The final story centers on Mikey's faltering efforts to prove Santa's existence to his friends. James Earl Jones voices the wise old-timer who may change everyone's mind, and Robert Goulet provides Mikey's singing voice during his solo of "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas." The kids wrap things up with an unsentimental version of "Jingle Bells, Christmas Smells." Parents who want their children to believe in Santa might want to avoid this holiday offering, as the pro-Santa resolution may be too subtle for the young ones. (Ages 5 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

1 out of 5 stars Buy another Recess movie   December 20, 2008
JLL (IN United States)
Although we normally love the characters and stories this is an awful movie. The number one thing all parents need to know is mentioned in the official review above. There is a very STRONG message that there is no Santa. If your child believes in Santa do not watch this movie. There is a very subtle suggestion that Santa is real at the very very end. The actual majority of the movie is on non-Christmas short episodes tied together loosely by having the teachers and principle remember things about the kids while stranded in a car stuck in a snow drift. Overall poor quality movie and I am not sure who the target audience would be. Those who believe in Santa will be mortified and those who don't will be bored.

"Recess-School's Out" was really pretty awesome, & although I never saw the Christmas version, I'll bet that it was also very charming, in a sense.-Earl

3 out of 5 stars Want to ruin Christmas for your 5 year old ???   June 22, 2003

Then make your children watch this movie . The last segment of this movie will forever alter your child's perception of Santa's existence . If you want to treasure the last few years of your child's innocence ,then protect them from watching Recess Christmas. I found the movie entertaining , but the way they presented the doubt about Santa really caused problems for my 5 year old.... We watched the movie last night and today my 5 year old is still asking questions. Should have carried a warning for parents.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Christmas story with James Earl Jones as Santa   August 2, 2002

This is a fun Christmas tape for fans of Recess. I think the last story featuring James Earl Jones as Santa was quite touching and funny. At least one other reviewer, who said there was "no Christmas content" on the tape, must not have actually watched it. I guess technically some of the material comes from the episodes they have produced but unless your child has taped every episode this is unlikely to be redundant in your collection.
